best bang for the buck in powered subs

Put one of these in a 1990 Corvette, I was amazed at how many features the Boss unit had, and how easy it was to install. That said, this was the perfect choice for me, sure I've had the serious 4-12" sub type setups in the past when I could still hear, and thats not what your going to get from this. If your looking to add some bass, and to fill out tones all the way down to 20Hz for just a great sounding system I would recommend this unit. I have had experience with other powered subs, this by far is the best for the price. You won't have the plunk sound from cranking the system up that you get from most units like this, my other speakers give out before this does. And yes I did say that this will get you response all the way down to 20Hz! Amazing performance from a package this size. my opinion is that Boss hit a home run with this one.
This sub rocks

Reviewer: BuzzinBlair,
After replacing the four stock 5.25" full range speakers in my 95 Dodge Spirit, I found the new speakers did not have as much bass response as the old stock speakers did, even in their buzzing, fluttering, worn out condition. This was an installation where I wanted to keep everything as close to stock as possible, and most importantly none of the upgraded stereo system should be visibly apparent from outside the vehicle. So despite my initial determination to not get into things like subwoofers, I set out to find the minimum addition (in terms of both cost and space) that would bring back the bass response I crave when playing my 80s metal compilation CDs. Having been used to just a moderate low end in my old stock speakers, I wasn't looking for anything to vibrate paint off cars in the next lane.

After searching the online car stereo retailers and discussion groups, it was clear that a powered compact subwoofer was the way to go. The Boss BASS600 was about as small as they come, can be found for a reasonable price, and had good reviews from folks who want to fill out a balanced sound for music like rock, country or jazz. I decided to install it under the driver's seat since I keep some things under the passenger seat that I want handy. That and the fact that I would appreciate the bass more than my wife would. I had hoped to install the sub laterally so that it would not be visible at all, but it did not quite fit that way so it had to be installed longitudinally under the seat.

Installation in a mid size sedan like the Spirit was a bit tricky. It started with finding an adapter to go between my stock Chrysler/Infinity CD player and the leads to the door speakers, and then trying to cram all those wires and plugs into the space behind the head unit without bending any wires into too tight a radius or breaking a plug. Then came the investigation of where to run the power cable from the battery through the firewall into the passenger compartment. After several days of poking around the engine compartment and upside down under the dash, I took a deep breath and drilled the hole through the firewall in the chosen location, followed by careful deburring, painting, insertion of a rubber grommet and silicone caulk. This sub specifies 8 gauge cable for power and ground, and a 30 amp fuse close to the battery. The local car stereo retailer had an installation kit with 8 gauge cable and a 40 amp fuse, or one for about half the price with 10 gauge cable and a 30 amp fuse. I went for the 8 gauge version and figured I could get a 30 amp fuse to go into the included fuse holder. WRONG. That type of fuse is only available in 40 amps and above, a different fuse holder is required for 30 amps, so I got another fuse holder. Running the cables under the carpet to the driver's seat was easier than I thought it would be. The cable supplied for connection of the remote volume control was WAY too long, so I used an extra phone cable I had around to make the connection since it uses RJ-11 phone plugs. I tested the cable on my phone to make sure it had continuity. WRONG AGAIN. The remote volume control does not work with 4-wire cable; use the supplied 6-wire cable. Shorten the 6-wire cable and crimp on a new plug if necessary. To mount the sub I used an old floor mat from that car so the color would match and aid in disguising it. With a 3/8" hole punch I made holes for the four corner mounts and penetrations for the cables. Notches were cut out of the mat so it would "grab" onto the steel seat supports. Plastic moldings were removed to ensure the carpet was hooking around something solid to hold it in place. #10 machine screws and bolts, along with rubber washers and bushings, secure the sub to the mat. Rubber straps with hooks going around the seat supports provide further stability. A spring wire under the seat that allows the seat to be adjusted concerned me because it would probably buzz with the subwoofer right below it. In fact that spring wire comes in contact with the sub. So I cut a slit down a length of 1/4" vinyl tubing and popped it over the wire to dampen any vibration and to protect the finish on the sub.

Finally, after a month of pondering and puttering around on the subwoofer project, it was time to pop in the fuse and turn on the system. Wow. I will keep this monster at its lowest setting. It really sounds great. Rich and full and smooth. Having installed it without direct connection to any metal in the car means there is no buzzing. And locating it under the driver's seat means I experience it physically, not just audibly, giving new meaning to the phrase "butt rock"!
Great Sound

I have a 2001 Toyota Corolla, and space is very limited. I had reviewed sub woofers and powered sub woofers for months here on Amazon and other web sites.

In January 2009 I installed an aftermarket Sony stereo and Alpine speakers in car, but there was no low end sound. It was good, but not great.
One day in May, while reading reviews here on Amazon, I decided to order the Boss Audio Bass600. I also ordered the wiring kit 2 for this model.
Did the installation myself, which took 3 hours. It was my first sub woofer install. It went pretty smooth. Most of the time is spent hiding wires and hooking RCA cables to back of stereo. I put the sub under the front passenger seat of the car, and it fit with room to spare. Wiring kit 2 is made very cheap. I used it, and it worked, but I would not use it again. 8 gauge hot wire, is made with fine copper strands, and and is to light in my opinion. It comes with 18 gauge wire for the amplifier remote, but manual calls for 16 gauge. I used the speaker wire that comes with the sub woofer, and cut it in half. It is 16 gauge. Worked great.

Turned the stereo on and WoW!!!!!!!!! Great deep bass. Just what it needed. I made different adjustments on the sub, and listened for a day at a time, before readjusting. Ended up with the gain at 1:00 O'Clock, bass boast set at 9:00 O'Clock, no subsonic volume, and low pass filter set at 12:00 O'Clock position, for more midrange. The sub balanced the sound very nicely.

I listen to mostly low bit rate mp3's, (country and older rock), and some songs have more bass than others. I didn't want hard pounding bass, just good bottom end. That's what this sub gives. Rich sounding bass. It sounds very good, and I could not be happier. I wish I'd bought this years ago. If you have a smaller vehicle, or truck with limited space, buy one. You won't be disappointed.

Great for the price!

I own a 2002 Toyota Tacoma base cab and there is VERY LITTLE space in this truck. I wanted to find a subwoofer really small that came with an amp and box already built in. The Boss Audio Bass600 was perfect in meeting all my needs. It fits right under the driver's seat and sounds GREAT! The bass sounds loud with no distortion. I can literally feel the power of this sub underneath me as a drive. All my friends thought I had two ten-inch subwoofers when they sat in my truck. For its size, it sounds amazing. It will not set your neighbors' alarms off, but it definitely will give you some "boom." I highly recommend this product to people with small vehicles. For $100, this sub/amp cannot be beat.
Just Freakin' Fantastic!

I bought this product in hopes of rejuvenating my system in my 79 300D Mercedes Benz. If you own a similar type of vehicle, you'll understand that audio wasn't the most important feature on any vehicle back then. My speakers had great highs and mids, but could never obtain that "bump" that could round out the system all together.

On first receiving this package, you'll be dumbfounded on how shiny and sturdy this sub woofer really is. Weighing in around 9lbs, it can accommodate easily under the seat, or if that isn't an option, you can install it in the passenger floorboard area with plenty of legroom left over. And trust me, you'll think this thing is not capable of the power it really has, just wait.

After installing it and finally testing it out... I WAS BLOWN AWAY!!! This had so much more power than I expected. It literally sounds like I have an entirely new sound system. Though there isn't enough bass to rattle your neighbors windows, you can easily achieve that "rumble" in your chest that resonates throughout the car easily. Before, I'd have to turn up the volume on the stereo to still be able to listen to music on the freeway, now I notice myself TURNING IT DOWN just so I can still listen to the outside world!

Even the guys who installed it at a local chain were blown away. The guy had to literally bring in the audio crew and check out how good this TINY sub actually sounded! Even one of the guys asked if I had one of the "tester" subs installed...

After listening to a range of indie music: iron & wine, sufjan stevens, fleet foxes, wilco, ugress, found sound orchestra and etc... & pop & hiphop, I couldn't be happier, it hits so 'clean' without distortion, even cranked up. The adjustable knobs to accentuate the sound definitely help out, so make sure you do listen to some of your favorite stuff and adjust until satisfied.

Now for those who want to rattle their skulls numb, this probably won't do you any justice, but for those who want to bring the "home theater system" feel to your vehicle, this is ABSOLUTELY THE BEST BANG FOR YOUR BUCK, literally!
